How to Remove Tannin Stains such as Red Wine, Coffee, Berries and Tomato Sauce

Tannin and plant-based stains often come from richly pigmented foods and beverages such as red wine, coffee, berries and tomato-based sauces. These stains can penetrate fabric quickly, especially on lighter colors, leaving visible discoloration if not treated properly.

PreWash

  • Pre-treatment is essential when addressing tannin and plant-based stains. Prompt attention helps prevent color from setting permanently
  • Get stain wet and apply Lindry Lab Stain Remover directly to the affected area and gently work into the fabric using the Lindry Lab Stain Brush
  • For more persistent staining, create a paste with Lindry Lab Oxy Booster and warm water and apply directly to the affected area
  • Allow it to rest briefly before laundering
  • For more established buildup, soak the garment in a basin of warm to hot water with a scoop of Lindry Lab Oxy Booster prior to washing.

Wash

  • Launder with your favorite Lindry Lab detergent according to the care label
  • Wash with similar colors.
  • Select the appropriate water temperature for the fabric, and ensure discoloration has fully lifted before drying
  • If unsure, air dry first, as heat may set residual staining. Note that stains can appear darker while the fabric is wet.

Drying

LL Tip: Avoid heat prior to treatment, as it can encourage pigment to set more deeply into the fibers. When possible, flush stains from the reverse side to help lift color outward rather than further into the fabric. For white cottons, indirect sunlight may gently brighten any remaining discoloration.
