Real Simple: 6 Items You Should Always Wash in Hot Water, According to Laundry Experts

Towels trap moisture, body oils, and bacteria more than almost anything else in the home. “Hot water helps eliminate odor-causing microbes, removes buildup, and restores absorbency so towels actually function the way they should,” explains Lindsey Boyd, fiber textile expert and founder of Lindry Lab.

“They may look clean but often hold onto residue and bacteria, which leads to that lingering musty smell and reduced absorbency over time," she explains. You can technically wash all towels in hot water, but white towels are less susceptible to color-fading.

Every single night, your bedding—including sheets, comforters, duvets, and pillowcases—accumulates sweat, skin cells, and oils. “Over time, buildup can lead to dullness, lingering odors, and less fresh-feeling sheets, even right after washing,” Boyd explains. “Hot water helps break down those oils more effectively and reduces allergens like dust mites.”  Read the story here.
